LISZT PIANO SONATA MONOGRAPHS
Franz Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor: Urtext Edition ab initio Tibor Szász, Gerard Carter, and Martin Adler
Franz Liszt completed his Piano Sonata in B minor at Weimar in 1853.
One hundred seventy years have passed since the publication in 1854 by the Breitkopf & Härtel publishing house. In the meantime, the Sonata has established itself as one of the most beloved and frequently performed works for piano solo. While a multitude of different editions have been published to this day, every one of them (even Urtext editions) had its shortcomings which were often copied from earlier editors. The current Urtext edition ab initio by Szász, Carter, and Adler corrects the most important flaws by giving Liszt’s manuscript its proper weight. The editorial principles of Szász, Adler, and Carter have received critical support from scholars and performers such as Charles Rosen, Marc-André Hamelin, and Mária Eckhardt. Contents:

He was born in Transylvania to Hungarian parents, and studied with Eliza Ciolan, a pupil of Alfred Cortot, before coming to the United States of America. He held a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan. Szász was a professor at Duke University and Professor of Piano at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, Germany. The completion of the current Urtext edition, in collaboration with Gerard Carter and Martin Adler, marks a major milestone in his lifelong research on the Liszt Sonata. Gerard Carter (1943–2024) was the published author of books and articles on the Liszt Sonata and on nineteenth century piano and organ performance. He worked on Liszt research with Martin Adler and Tibor Szász, including the completion of the current Urtext edition, and produced CDs of historic reproducing piano roll recordings such as those of the Liszt Sonata by Ernest Schelling and Liszt pupil Eugen d’Albert. Gerard studied piano with Eunice Gardiner at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and organ with Jean Langlais in Paris. He held the Associate diploma in music (piano performing) and was a graduate in Economics and Law from the University of Sydney. Martin Adler, born 1973 in Kassel, Germany, earned a PhD in chemistry and worked as an IT specialist before becoming a grammar school teacher of chemistry and physics. An amateur pianist and musicological researcher, he has co-authored and published a number of well-received books and articles on the Liszt Sonata together with Gerard Carter and Tibor Szász. He lives in Bonn with his wife and children and collects piano roll recordings of nineteenth-century pianists as well as 78 rpm piano records. Contact: info@lisztsonata.com |
